Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) is a rare but potentially serious disease spread by a virus that infects mosquitos. Luckily, you can take actions to protect you and your loved ones that can reduce your risk.

How EEE Affects Humans

After a person is bitten by a mosquito that carries the virus related to EEE, they typically develop symptoms within three to 10 days. The most common is high fever, usually ranging from 103 to 106 degrees. It may be accompanied by a headache, stiff neck, and low energy.

EEE can worsen extremely fast, with some people developing encephalitis—a life-threatening inflammation of the brain—within a few days. The condition isn’t contagious and can only spread through a bite from an infected mosquito. No effective treatment or cure exists for EEE, so prevention is key.

How to Limit Exposure to Mosquitos

mosquito controlMosquitos tend to be more active at dusk and dawn, so aim to stay inside during these hours. When you’re outside, wear clothing that covers up the skin, such as long-sleeved shirts, pants, long socks, and hats. Clothing can be treated with permethrin.  Health officials recommend you apply a mosquito repellent that contains oil of lemon eucalyptus or DEET to exposed areas.

Since mosquitos are attracted to standing water, promptly remove any containers that collect rain from around your home, such as watering cans and flower pots. Clear all gutters and downspouts twice a year (in the spring and fall) to prevent leaf accumulation, which allows water to pool. Planting mosquito-repelling plants, such as citronella, catnip, and lavender, may also be helpful.
