When purchasing a new toilet, some people give little thought to an important factor: placement. The location you choose will impact both the look and functionality of your bathroom. To make the right decision, plumbers suggest considering these three factors.

What Should You  Consider When Placing a Toilet?

1. Bathroom Size

Because a toilet needs a certain amount of clearance to be functional, you’ll need to consider your bathroom size when placing it. In general, a toilet requires at least 21 inches of clear space (with no intruding walls or fixtures) in front of it. If you have a larger bathroom, though, aim for about 30 inches. You’ll also need at least 15 inches of clear space from the center of the toilet to each side, or 18 inches if your bathroom is big enough. Finally, make sure the toilet is located somewhere it won’t be obstructed by the swing of the bathroom door.

2. Shower Location

plumberAs with the bathroom door, you’ll need to consider the swing of the shower door. Place the toilet far enough from the shower to prevent door interference. If your bathroom is too small and you can’t place it far enough away, consider switching to a sliding door.

3. Waste Pipe Location

Every toilet features a rough-in size, which is the distance from the wall to the middle of the waste pipe in the floor. Most models have a rough-in size of 12 inches, though some are 14 inches or 10 inches (which is best for very small bathrooms). Before you place your toilet, a plumber may need to move the waste pipe back a couple of inches to ensure the toilet has the necessary 21 inches of clear space in front of it.
