Garage doors serve an important purpose beyond protecting your vehicle and belongings from the elements. It’s also an important element to your home’s curb appeal and your family’s overall security. While you might not give it much thought unless something goes wrong, the door itself is a complex system of parts that must all work together seamlessly to function properly.

A Brief Guide to the Anatomy of a Garage Door

1. Panels

The panels are what you probably think of when you think garage door. The panels make up the actual door and are available in a wide array of styles, finishes, and materials, including wood, metal, and fiberglass. Most modern doors have panels divided into sections, which allows the door to bend while being opened. In some models, the panels will tip up into a single section, or have a gate-style opening.

2. Torsion Springs

garage doorGarage doors are attached to your home using torsion springs, which are controlled by a system of drums and cables. These springs twist and bear most of the weight of the door while it’s being lifted.

These components are what allow you to lift the door manually. With enough force, the torsion springs will lift the door automatically after it is raised to a certain point. These springs need to be perfectly designed and installed to bear the weight of the panels. Otherwise, it will be difficult to lift the door, or the door will become misaligned and be at risk for dropping and closing unexpectedly.

3. Tracks & Rollers

When you open and close the garage door, it runs along two tracks that are installed vertically from the ground onto the garage’s ceiling. Without the tracks, the door would have nothing to rest on.

The door itself is fitted with rollers, which slide along the inside of the track, allowing it to raise and lower with ease while also holing the door in place. Most doors have multiple, evenly spaced rollers. However, they can wear out over time, causing the door to be noisy and preventing it from opening smoothly.
