Buying a home is an exciting rite of passage that many Americans look forward to. Real estate is a big investment, so finding your dream property takes time. Viewing houses in person gives you an intimate look at a space and is always advisable. As you visit homes, keep these etiquette rules in mind.

Do:

Get there on time.

You likely aren't the only person interested in the property, so every impression counts—especially the first one. Don't leave the seller or listing broker waiting. Tardiness makes you look unreliable, which isn’t a trait you want to be associated with if you are going to be viewed as a serious buyer.

Plan to remove your shoes.

buying a homeSome sellers may require you to take off your shoes to keep the house clean and protect the flooring. If you see a pile of shoes or a shoe rack by the door, it's safe to assume you should take your footwear off. Don gear that you can easily remove upon arrival.

Don’t:

Open every door and drawer.

During a home visit, it's perfectly acceptable to open closets, kitchen cabinets, linen closets, and bedroom and bathroom doors. Respect the seller's privacy and refrain from opening nightstand drawers, dressers, and medicine cabinets.

Bring small children or pets.

For a first viewing, leave the kids at home. Little ones will distract you, so you may miss important details. They are also inquisitive and may get into spaces—like the nightstand—that are meant to be private. Pets should also be left at home as they can make a mess.
