When moving a long distance, packing up everything you own becomes a complicated process. Making sure nothing gets lost, damaged, or left behind can be a challenge when you have a cluttered living space. This guide can help ensure a stress-free move, even if you live in a crowded home.

How to Pack Up a Cluttered House

1. Decide What’s Going With You

Moving is the ideal time to downsize your household, so sort everything into separate piles. In addition to having a pile for the items you’ll be bringing along, there should also be separate piles for trash and donations.

Anything that hasn’t been used in six months or more should either go into the donation pile or the trash pile. Dispose of used items that cost under $10 because they can be replaced easily.

2. Pack an “Essentials” Bag First

Set aside important belongings before filling boxes. Packing items like daily hygiene products in a special bag will ensure you’ll have those items easily on hand during your travels.

This bag should be big enough to hold a change of clothes just in case you can’t get into the new home on the first night. Be sure every family member has a similar bag and that each contains a toothbrush, soap, shampoo, and other important products. This will help lessen the amount of clutter in the home as well.

3. Label Every Box

MovingAt a minimum, each box should be labeled with the room for which it’s intended. For example, a box filled with pots and pans should be labeled for the kitchen. To make things easier for your moving company, you can color code the labels by using a different colored marker to label boxes for each room.

When every kitchen box is labeled green and every living room box is marked red, it’ll ensure each box gets to its destination.

4. Keep a Complete Inventory

Some people prefer to put an inventory list right on the box, but you can also use a separate sheet of paper or a phone app. The idea is to have an accurate inventory of everything you own, including each item’s location.

This way, if a box gets lost or damaged, you’ll have the information needed to file a claim. Companies that offer packing services are insured, but it may be difficult to file a claim if you don’t know exactly what was lost.
