Your water heater is essential for supplying your home with hot water that will keep it clean and comfortable for you. When the water heater breaks down, it can sometimes take time to fix. Ideally, you should catch problems early, before the heater breaks down completely, so you can avoid having to go too long without hot water. Here are some of the early warning signs of an issue.

What Are the Warning Signs You Need Water Heater Repairs?

1. Quality

If your water heater is starting to corrode inside, some of the corroded metal and debris will get into the water. This can cause the water to look brown or rusty. It can also create a metallic smell. If you have bacteria growing in your water heater, you may also notice a sulfur smell or taste. A corroded tank can’t be repaired and needs to be replaced.

2. Temperature

Water HeatersSometimes a water heater will stop working suddenly, leaving you completely without hot water. At other times, it will gradually get less effective as the heating elements wear out or burners get damaged and clogged. If you’ve noticed that the water is warm, but not warm enough, change the unit's temperature settings. If you find you have to set the unit hotter and hotter, or if it doesn’t respond to the change, you need repairs.

3. Noise

If your unit has too much silt accumulated at the bottom of the unit, it may start to make sudden loud clanging, rattling, or thumping noises. Try emptying and rinsing out the tank. If the problem continues after you’ve cleaned out the unit, it may be due to corroded, deteriorated, or loose parts that need repairs. Also, if the unit runs too long with silt in the bottom, it may start to develop leaks, so watch for any signs of dampness around the bottom of the unit.
