Intramural radiographs are the most common type of dental X-ray because it detects tooth decay. However, a general or pediatric dentist might need to check other areas of oral health during a visit. Panoramic X-rays, which are classified as extraoral radiographs, provide a larger picture of the entire mouth and jaw. Here’s a look at this process and the common uses for it.

Why Do Dentists Use Panoramic X-Rays?

Unlike intramural radiographs, this type of X-ray doesn’t detect cavities. Instead, the dentist uses it for more specialized purposes, such as:

  • Sinus Problems: Since this X-ray covers a larger area, it can be used to photograph the maxillary sinus. This helps the dentist detect tooth problems caused by sinusitis and treat the area more effectively.
  • Impacted Wisdom Teeth: Dentists can get a good look at wisdom teeth, which can otherwise be difficult to see in their entirety. This is especially true of wisdom teeth that are impacted under the gums.
  • Tooth Development: Pediatric dentists are able to monitor the development of permanent teeth underneath baby teeth.

What Are the Benefits?

pediatric dentistThe process is more comfortable than other options, as the patient can stand or sit. While other types of X-rays require a piece of film to be held in the mouth, a panoramic X-ray machine already has film embedded in its rotating mechanism.

In addition to comfort, it’s a quick procedure since it requires fewer steps to complete. This also means that patients are exposed to less radiation compared to other types.

How Are They Performed?

First, the dentist will ask the patient to wear a lead apron for protection from radiation. They’ll then be directed to stand or sit in front of the machine while biting down on a stick attached to it. This bite stick helps the mouth stay in the correct position while the X-ray is being taken.

After the patient is in position, the machine will rotate around the head in a semicircle to photograph the teeth and jaw. The entire process takes less than 30 seconds.
