Your water well system is crucial for accessing safe, clean water at home. These systems are often well-designed and built to last for years, but that doesn’t mean they’ll be problem-free. Be on the lookout for the following issues to ensure you can fix them right away.

Water Well Problems You May Experience

1. Hard Water

Excessive amounts of calcium and magnesium can lead to hard water. You might notice this problem if you have dry skin and hair, buildup on your faucets and household appliances, white residue on your dishes and glass surfaces, or faded, rough clothing following a laundry cycle. Over time, this condition can damage your plumbing and reduce your appliances' effectiveness, so treat the water well system as soon as this problem arises. Install a water softener to filter the liquid and leave you with fresh, clean water.

2. Turbidity

water wellTurbid water appears when sediment enters your well system from runoff, drilling, or earth-moving projects. You'll notice this issue if your water is cloudy or murky. This makes it unappealing to use in your home, and it may contain harmful microbes that cause viral or bacterial infections. To treat this problem, add a filter to your system, so large pieces of sediment can't pass through. If you're concerned about harmful microbes, also look into options that use UV light to eliminate bacteria.

3. Fluoride

Fluoride is a mineral that's commonly found in well water. At low levels, it's beneficial for oral health and doesn't have any adverse effects. However, if your water is saturated with fluoride, it can cause dental fluorosis, which creates white or brown stains on teeth. To correct this issue, install reverse osmosis filters that reduce the amount of fluoride in your drinking water.

4. Acidic Water

Acidic water is the result of lead in your well system, which can cause significant mental and physical health issues, especially in developing children. Signs of acidic water include blue, green, or rust stains in your sinks and bathtubs, metallic-tasting water, and weakened pipes. If you notice any of these, immediately treat your water with a neutralizing filter, injections that can raise the pH in your system, or plastic pipe replacements.
