A storage unit is an ideal place to keep items safe, secure, and out of the way. But whether you need a unit for a short-term situation like a move or remodel, or for long-term storage when space at home is limited, you need to pack and move items with care and caution. To help you in this process, below are a few common mistakes to avoid when moving into a storage unit.

3 Self-Storage Mistakes to Avoid

1. Not Packing Items Securely

No matter how long you'll need the storage unit, items should be well protected inside their boxes. Use packing paper and bubble wrap around all fragile items, and be mindful of how many items you're putting in each box, being careful not to overpack.

If there is room inside the top or inner sides of the box, stuff these spots with plenty of paper. Use smaller boxes for heavier items and medium and large boxes for light items. Boxes should be easy to lift, and you shouldn't hear items jostling around inside during transport.

2. Neglecting to Organize Your Stacking

Place boxes with items you think you might need to retrieve toward the front. Put heavier boxes on the bottom and don't make your stacks too high—about chest-height is a good safety precaution.

3. Not Making an Aisle

When moving into a storage unit, many people make the mistake of placing their first load of boxes along the back wall, then slowly building more rows of boxes outward from there. But this arrangement makes it impossible to access any boxes that are not in the immediate front row.

Instead, arrange boxes along the sides with a clear aisle down the center. Again, position those boxes that contain items you might need in the front row.
