As a front-facing feature of your home, your driveway has a significant impact on curb appeal. It also protects your vehicle and the people who traverse it daily. To make the most of your driveway, learn the signs that indicate when to get a replacement.

When to Invest in a New Driveway

1. Big Cracks

Small cracks are typical with asphalt and can be easily repaired. However, if they’re left unaddressed, they will grow into major cracks that allow water to seep inside and compromise the layer underneath. If the water underneath freezes, it will expand and push the asphalt surface upward. Any large cracks or a collection of cracks that look like alligator skin mean you need to replace the driveway.

2. Potholes

drivewayPotholes are holes or large depressions in the asphalt. If you spot a small pothole, have it patched immediately. A pothole left in the driveway is a tripping hazard for your family, plus it can damage your vehicle’s suspension and allow water beneath the surface. If you have a large hole or several in your driveway, it’s best to replace the entire surface.

3. Standing Water

A driveway should be sloped to let water drain away. If you have issues with standing water without a pothole present, then the foundation of the surface has been compromised. The driveway will need to be removed, so the ground can be resurfaced to lay new asphalt.
