Organizing the kitchen can seem like an impossible task to undertake, especially when dealing with a lack of storage. Rather than shoving items into cabinets or leaving everything on the counter, consider the following tips. With a few simple materials and a little creativity, you can restore order to your kitchen space.

4 Tips for Organizing Your Kitchen

1. Clear Them Out

Spread everything out on the countertops and kitchen table. Group like items together, such as mixing bowls, utensils, and hand-held appliances.

Seeing everything laid out will allow you to identify pieces you may have forgotten about because they were lost in the back on a tall shelf. Box up these and other items you hardly use for donation. Paring down will make it easier to fit everything back into the available space.

2. Map Out Each Zone

cabinetsEvery kitchen can be broken down into a series of zones. The area used for general cooking and baking purposes is usually found near the stove. The serving area is usually on the island or at the end of the counter closest to the dining room or kitchen table. The beverage and snack zone is located by the refrigerator or pantry.

Take stock of your kitchen and identify where the zones are, or where you want them to be. Mapping them out will help you determine where your kitchen supplies should go.

3. Utilize Inserts & Organizers

Inserts are useful for dividing drawers into sections and keeping items in place. This will also help pieces from getting buried at the bottom of deep drawers.

Organizational inserts come in several different lengths and are customizable. They can construct additional levels within a cabinet that allows you to stack dishes of varying sizes, or display spices so you can effectively read their labels. Inserts increase accessibility and reduce the potential for damage when removing items for use.

4. Store Bigger Items First

Begin by replacing items in the cabinets that require the most space, such as crockpots, blenders, and mixers. Put items back based on size, moving from mixing bowls, baking pans, and casserole dishes to cutting boards and baking utensils.

Once larger items are neatly put away, focus on organizing the dishes and mugs and glasses, and put food items back in the cabinets. Finish up by putting away silverware and other small gadgets.
