The battery is an indispensable car or truck part that supplies energy to the electrical systems, ensuring the car will start and run dependably. However, a battery has a shelf life, and with time and constant use, it will naturally start to lose some of its power. Fortunately, there are ways to extend the lifespan of a battery. Use the following tips to get the longest and most effective usage from this essential component.

How to Extend Car & Truck Battery Life

1. Check That the Lights Are Off

Whenever you exit the vehicle, make it a habit to ensure all interior and exterior lights are switched off. Leaving the lights on for extended periods places a huge burden on the battery, and will eventually drain it of power.

Most modern vehicles will alert you when the vehicle's headlights are left on. This is usually signaled by a ringing sound that accompanies an opened door. However, older vehicles don't have this amenity. If you drive an older car or truck, tape a reminder note to the steering wheel or dashboard, so you don't forget to flip the lights off.

2. Restrict Short Rides

A shorter ride doesn’t provide the same opportunity and places a greater energy burden on the battery since the vehicle won't run long enough for it to gain back the energy it has lost.

Whenever possible, limit the number of short drives you take. Instead of taking the vehicle out for several small errands, aim to perform all errands in a single, longer trip.

3. Minimize Idling & Don’t Leave the Vehicle Undriven

Idling for long periods will also drain life from the battery, especially if you’re simultaneously using the vehicle's sound system, heater, or air conditioner. If you need to idle, preserve this important truck part by switching off the radio and climate control system. Try not to idle for more than a few minutes at a time.

Don't leave your vehicle undriven for more than a week. Starting it up and taking it for a drive will also prolong its battery life.
