Following the funeral services of a loved one, it’s a privilege to be given some of their ashes in an urn. Naturally, you’ll want to put it in a place of honor where you can admire it and remember them. However, since it’s precious and irreplaceable, you must also keep it safe. If you’re not sure where to put it, here are a few suggestions.

Where to Keep a Cremation Urn

1. Mausoleum

A mausoleum is a building or structure that offers crypts for caskets, but is also commonly a place to display urns and remembrances. They are safe, secure, and considered ecologically friendly because they save on land space. They are maintained regularly by the cemetery or funeral home staff. A columbarium is slightly different in that it consists of many niches small enough to hold individual urns with plaques. The niches may also have glass doors or other safety measures to protect the contents from damage or theft.

2. Somewhere High or Locked

urnIf you’d prefer to keep the urn at home, find a place or space where it cannot be easily be reached by pets or children. Bookshelves and fireplace mantels are often excellent choices. You could even ask a contractor to build a niche into the wall specifically for this purpose.

If one of the other choices above is not available, consider getting a safety deposit box or trophy case to use for storage instead. It is important to make sure to keep the key or passcode to yourself and maybe one other person you can trust.

3. Sentimental Areas

You may want to take your loved one’s interests and passions into account. For example, if they enjoyed cooking, you can place the urn on top of a cabinet, or another safe place in the kitchen where it won’t be disturbed such as in a corner. If they were an avid reader, you may want to put it on a bookshelf. If they were a pianist, it might look elegant on a grand piano. Sometimes it is the wishes of the deceased for their urn to be buried in a cemetery in their family plot, which is more common than not. This is very sentimental and gives grieving family members a place to go and reflect on their loved one’s life.
