Part of keeping up with auto maintenance involves replacing car filters. They help remove pollutants from your car’s major systems, but as they capture unwanted contaminants and dirt, they become clogged and need to be changed out. To ensure peak vehicle performance and prevent costly damage, here are four types of filters you need to change.

An Introduction to Automotive Filters

1. Cabin Filter

This filter captures dirt and pollutants that pass through the heating and air conditioning system. With this filter in place, you and your passengers can breathe more easily and avoid irritation or aggravated respiratory conditions. It also helps prevent air conditioning clogging and unpleasant smells. It should be replaced every 15,000 to 20,000 miles or once a year.

2. Air Filter

auto maintenanceCar engines require oxygen for combustion, though other contaminants often accompany the incoming air. Made from pleated cotton, foam, or synthetic materials, air filters keep dirt, debris, and insects out of the engine. But they won’t function properly if they’re too full of grime and may allow impurities into the air-fuel mixture, which reduces fuel efficiency and contaminates the engine.

Luckily, this filter is easy to clean or replace. Simply disconnect the air intake, pull the filter out, and hold it up to the light. If light passes through it, it’s still good. If not, it’s time for a new one, or at least a thorough vacuuming.

3. Oil Filter

Oil lubricates the moving parts of your engine to prevent friction and overheating. But as the oil travels, it picks up dirt and contaminants, which can reduce its viscosity and turn it into ineffective sludge.

That’s why a filter removes dirt from the oil as it passes through. Replace the filter every time you change the oil as part of your auto maintenance routine.

4. Fuel Filter

A fuel filter removes any dirt, grit, or rust in gasoline or diesel before it reaches your fuel tank. If these contaminants get into your engine, they may cause tiny abrasions that, over time, can reduce your vehicle’s efficiency. Every 30,000 miles or two years, have this filter replaced by a trusted mechanic.
