Whether you're moving to a smaller house or want to store seasonal items, storage units can help you achieve this. Whatever your motives are, organizing your items allows you to navigate the unit and access what you need easily. Below are a few strategies to help you start.

How to Organize a Storage Unit Effectively

1. Limit Box Sizes

Use a maximum of two different bin sizes for efficient stacking. When you use many different sizes, you cannot stack them as well, resulting in wasted space. If your belongings will be in the storage unit for at least six months, consider plastic bins with sealable lids to protect the contents from dust, dirt, and insects. Clear bins work well because you can see what’s inside. Place the boxes on wooden pallets for additional protection from water damage.

2. Create an Inventory

This allows you to determine if something is missing easily, as well as remember items that you may store for long periods. You should also label the boxes to save time when you visit the storage unit.

3. Make an Aisle

Ensure your storage unit features a center aisle so that you can access all of the boxes easily. Walking through the unit saves time and prevents you from accidentally bumping into something and knocking it over. Place lesser-used items in the back of the unit and work your way forward so that belongings you’ll require soon are accessible in the front.

4. Use Fabric Instead of Plastic

Cover furniture and other large, cumbersome items with old sheets and towels instead of plastic. Plastic does not allow your belongings to breathe and can trap moisture inside, encouraging mold and mildew growth. Disassemble what you can before draping the pieces with old sheets to create more space in the unit.
