Cemeteries are sacred spaces that are special to many families and friends of the deceased. It’s essential to be respectful and follow the unspoken rules of these resting places. If you’re visiting a loved one for the first time after their funeral service and burial, keep the following guidelines in mind.

Do:

Check the rules before you visit.

Some cemeteries have strict rules that you’ll need to follow, and it’s best to check them before your visit. They may listed on the facility’s website, or you can call and ask the staff.

Many cemeteries will display visiting hours and list items that aren’t allowed on the grounds. They may have rules about pets and noise, as well as decorating regulations. Checking ahead of time ensures nothing interferes with your visit and that you respect the other visitors.

Keep volume to a minimum.

If you’re visiting with children, make sure they understand the importance of a quiet and respectful environment. Even as you drive up to the facility, make sure you aren’t playing loud music that can disturb the other guests or ongoing funeral services.

Don’t:

Walk on other graves.

Gravesites are sometimes the last physical reminders of the deceased. You should treat other sites as you would want your loved one’s grave to be respected. Make sure your children aren’t running around or playing on the other graves. Always watch your step and try to stick to the designated paths.

Litter.

Leaving trash on the grounds creates extra work for the staff. It can also offend other visitors. Pick up anything you bring for a picnic, and be mindful of what you’re leaving behind.

Try not to leave food that will attract insects and rodents. Large blankets or flags may blow away in the wind, and staked displays could get in the way of lawn care. Make sure any decorations are tightly secured and within your loved one’s gravesite.
