While you may feel confident in your ability to move a bookshelf, a heavy dishwasher is another matter. Furniture movers treat dishwashers and other appliances with extra caution to ensure that the move doesn’t cause any accidental damage. If you are transporting your dishwasher to a new home, here are some tips to help.

How Can You Prepare a Dishwasher for Furniture Movers?

1. Shut Off Everything

The dishwasher uses both electricity and water, and you must disconnect these utilities before moving it. Flip the circuit breaker switch that leads to the kitchen to prevent electricity from reaching the device, and then turn off the water supply valves under the sink. Next, disconnect the dishwasher’s drainage pipe and unplug the power cable. You can typically find these under the kitchen sink, as well.

2. Slide It Out

The screws holding it in place are typically accessible from the inside, and they will be on the roof of the unit. After removing the screws, slowly pull the dishwasher away from the wall. By taking your time and moving it gently, you will avoid damaging the drainage pipe, supply lines, and flooring.

3. Wrap It for Transport

Once the dishwasher is out, you must prepare it for transport. Use packing tape to secure the door, and wrap an old blanket or a moving cover around the appliance to protect it from scratches. You will also want to tape the wires to the dishwasher to prevent them from breaking. Furniture movers will typically use a dolly to load it onto the moving truck, as this reduces the risk of scratching the floor.
