Vision care is particularly important for those with an underlying health concern like lupus. Such an illness can lead to eye complications, such as dry eye, drooping eyelids, and blurry vision. Here’s some advice for dealing with this condition.

How Lupus Patients Should Handle Vision Care

1. Apply Eye Drops

vision careLupus often results in dry eye syndrome, an uncomfortable condition in which teardrop production is reduced. Many people experience pain, grittiness, a burning sensation, and redness, so it's important to keep the eyes lubricated. Over-the-counter eye drops can help, or your doctor can prescribe medications approved for long-term use that reduce inflammation, relieve pain, and help your eyes heal.

2. Take Omega-3 Supplements

If your physician approves, consider taking a daily supplement of fish oil or another source of omega-3 fatty acids. This also reduces dry eye symptoms. Researchers believe omega-3s help the meibomian glands along the rim of the eyelid produce a thin film of protective, lubricating eye oil. During a randomized, controlled trial, 65% of patients in the test group reported a considerable improvement in their conditions after 90 days of ingesting two 500 mg capsules daily.

3. Stay Vigilant

Lupus can lead to numerous eye issues, including drooping eyelids, eye pain, blurry or double vision, and even changes to the skin around your eyes. Watch for new symptoms and report any changes to your rheumatologist and ophthalmologist. The more carefully you monitor your eye health and the more promptly you deal with arising issues, the fewer problems you'll experience.
