A wood fence is a classically appealing home feature and enhances privacy and security in the backyard area. Painting or sealing the structure increases its lifespan while also allowing you to customize the look of the wood. Use the guide below for the best results.

Do:

Choose the right product.

Paints and stains both safeguard wood from moisture and ultraviolet (UV) rays, but you must make your selection carefully to ensure you pick one that suits your lifestyle. Paint needs to be reapplied regularly (more information below), while stains are more low-maintenance.

You also need to decide on the color of the fence. Both types of products come in a wide variety of colors, so pick a shade similar to the hue of your siding, roof, or trim to create a cohesive look.

Remove old paint.

If the structure was previously painted, remove the chipped and peeling layer first. Use a scraping tool to create a clean, smooth surface to work on. You may need scrapers of different sizes to access plank surfaces and the crevices between posts.

Don’t:

Skip the primer.

wood fenceWhile staining doesn’t require priming, this initial step is essential when using paint. Primer seals the wood and makes it smoother, helping the top layer of paint last longer. It also allows the color to appear as vibrant and appealing as possible.

After priming, wait at least one hour before applying a coat of paint to ensure the surface is completely dry.

Think fence maintenance ends here.

Repaint or restain the wood fence periodically to keep it protected. In general, you should reapply paint once every two to three years. With staining, you only need a new coat every three to five years.

If the color starts to face or you notice water being absorbed into the surface, reapply products sooner.
