Automatic commercial doors provide a first impression of your business, plus they protect the store from the elements and provide security. However, if you aren’t careful, they can become damaged or break entirely. Avoid these common mistakes to keep your doors in good shape.

5 Common Mistakes that Impair Commercial Doors

1. Burning Out the Motor

Automated doors rely on a motor to open and close. This component needs to be serviced at least once or twice a year to keep it properly lubricated and all of the belts on their tracks. Without this type of service, the motor will wear down over time and may break.

2. Letting Debris into the Track

Commercial DoorsWhen debris like sticks, pebbles, or coins fall into the door’s track, it won’t open or close efficiently. If you notice that the door isn’t closing all the way, check the track for these obstructions.

To avoid the problem in the future, regularly inspect the track and threshold. Sweep the surrounding area to remove debris.

3. Installing the Wrong Door

You need to understand your business’s foot traffic to choose the right type of door. Foot traffic is categorized as high, average, or low.

Stores that see 400-500 door openings a day fall into the high frequency and need a Grade 1 door. This model has a heavy-duty security lock and can withstand greater wear and tear.

80 openings a day is average and requires a Grade 2 door. 25 openings or fewer a day is considered low foot traffic and can have a Grade 3 door system.

4. Placing Objects in the Way

The area immediately surrounding the automatic doors needs to be kept clear of obstructions. Plants, boxes, or display cases can prevent the door from opening entirely, which stresses the motor. When placing objects near the door, always test it to ensure there’s no blockage.

5. Blocking the Sensor

Many automated doors use a movement sensor to open for customers. If a display blocks it, it won’t see a customer approaching and will fail to open, so you need to keep the area clear.

Similarly, a sensor can become covered in dust, dirt, or other contaminants, disrupting its function. If you’re experiencing issues, clean the sensor off with a damp microfiber cloth.
