A septic system is a convenient option for waste management that you can install on your property. It’s ideal if you are unable to connect to a municipal wastewater network. However, putting a septic system in place requires rigorous planning, so find out what you should do to prepare below.

5-Step Checklist for Septic System Installation

1. Check Your Local Legislation

Your county or city will likely have regulations regarding septic tank installation. Check with your local department of health before making any plans. In Hawaii, for example, all septic system plans must be cleared by the Wastewater Branch of Hawaii's Environmental Management Division.

2. Get a Soil Test Done

A soil test is needed to make sure your property can safely handle a septic system, specifically the drain field. Good quality soil helps filter wastewater expelled by the system. If yours isn't up to par, soil remediation—for instance, adding air to the earth—can help.

3. Clear the Area

Once the septic system plan is done and you know where it will be situated, clear the area. Remove debris from the installation site and the path to it. Make sure the driveway is clear on the day of installation, so contractors can easily pull up with their trucks and tools.

4. Prepare for Water to Be Shut Down

5. Alert Your Neighbors

Installing a septic system requires serious digging. Heavy machinery will be in your yard, making noise and kicking up dust. As a courtesy, let your neighbors know in advance when to expect the disturbance.
