While broken plumbing can be a stressful problem to deal with, not all issues require the services of a professional plumber. Some repairs can be fixed quickly and easily by you if you have all the plumbing parts and tools. Below, learn about three of the more common DIY plumbing repairs and what you'll need to perform them.

How Can You Perform DIY Plumbing Repairs?

1. Leaky Faucets

A leaking faucet is an annoyance that can be quite costly, with the constant drip running up your monthly water bill. Even when the faucet is securely off, water will still drip from a leaky faucet. To address this issue, you'll need two plumbing parts: a new cartridge and an O-ring. You'll also need to know the name of the faucet manufacturer and the model number to find the right cartridge. The repair involves shutting off the water supply valve, removing the faucet handle, removing the old cartridge and O-ring, replacing them with the new ones, and reattaching the handle before turning the water valve back on.

2. Clogged Drains

plumbing partsA clogged drain will cause water to back up into the sink, tub, or toilet, or it will make water drain noticeably slower. The best place to start with a clogged drain is a plunger, which will exert air pressure onto the clog and loosen it. If this doesn't work, visit a plumbing parts store and pick up a plumber's snake, a long and flexible auger that you feed into the drain to break up the clog.

3. Low Water Pressure

Low water pressure means there isn't enough air pressure to maintain a strong and steady flow of water out of your taps. There are a few reasons why water pressure might be low. One of the most common is a buildup of water deposits, which can be fixed by filling a small plastic baggie with white vinegar and hanging it around the faucet or showerhead with a rubber band; let the fixture-head soak for a couple of hours and see if the deposits loosen. If that doesn't do the trick, you may need to replace the screen or aerator of the fixture, or, barring that, the entire fixture itself.
