If you have a new puppy, their first vet visit is essential. Your vet will look for any health issues, check for parasites, provide the necessary pet vaccinations, and answer any questions you may have about your dog’s care. Preparing for the visit will make it a more positive experience for you and your puppy, so follow these tips.

How to Prepare for a First Vet Visit

1. Lay the Groundwork

Dogs are more likely to be anxious when trying new activities or in new environments. You can set your dog up for success by introducing them beforehand to as many elements of veterinary care as possible.

While you’re petting them, handle their ears, tail, and paws to get them used to having these areas examined.

If you’ll be traveling in the car to the appointment, introduce them to your vehicle with lots of treats and praise to make it fun.

Finally, set up a time to bring your puppy to the veterinary clinic before the day of their appointment, so they can adjust to the sights and smells.

2. Pay Attention to Your Puppy

VetYour vet will ask you many questions about your dog to get a picture of their health. Pay attention to how much your dog is eating, including how many cups of food you feed them, what kind, and whether your dog eats it all.

Look for any signs your pet may be unwell, such as lethargy, limping, excessive scratching, coughing, or frequent sneezing.

Also, note the appearance of your dog’s stool and how often they go.

3. Plan the Day of Your Visit

Before your puppy’s appointment, take them on a walk. This will help get some energy out, so your dog is calmer during their exam. Ask your vet in advance if they’ll need a stool sample; if so, try to collect one on the walk.

When it’s time to go to the clinic, carry your puppy in your arms while keeping them on a leash in case they get down. If that isn’t practical, keep them in a kennel.

During the visit, speak in a calm voice; your dog will pick up on your mood.
