Insulating a garage door is a great way to keep this space cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Even if you don’t spend time in this area, shielding against airflow can go a long way in maintaining your home’s indoor temperature—and keeping your energy bills to a minimum. However, if you want to get the best results from this project, you’ll need to make sure all of the materials are installed correctly. To help you create an energy-efficient garage, here are some steps to adding insulation to the door.

How to Insulate A Garage Door

1. Measure Panels and Cut Batting

garage doorWhen you’re inside your garage, measure each garage door panel from edge to edge. If you can’t find a pre-cut insulation kit that fits these panels perfectly, you will have to use a sharp boxcutter to cut the batting to size. Be sure to follow any safety precautions for the insulation you’re using. For instance, you should wear goggles, gloves, and a face mask when working with fiberglass products.

2. Tape and Attach Clips

Apply heavy-duty double-sided tape to the center of each panel on the interior of the door. If a panel is particularly large, you may need to spread out two pieces of tape across the surface to ensure a secure hold. Next, push the backend of a plastic retention clip into each section of tape so that it stays put.

3. Secure Sections Within Panel Edges

Place each section of batting into the matching panel. Apply pressure to help the insulation stick to the double-sided tape. Tuck all the edges of the material into the lips of the metal frame that surrounds each panel.

4. Fasten Retention Clips

Once each section of batting is applied, use your gloved hand to press against the insulation and locate the retention clips you placed on the tape. Next, gently slice the insulation with the boxcutter so that the clip is accessible. Attach the front end of the clip to the back pieces so that they securely fasten the batting to the door.

5. Install and Test Weather Stripping

To optimize the garage door’s energy-efficiency, take stock of the weather stripping around the side and bottom edges of the garage door. Running your hand around the edges, lightly press on the door to simulate wind pressure. If you notice any air gaps or spot damages stripping, replace it to seal all the vulnerable edges.
