Dental health is crucial for toddlers, even if their baby teeth haven’t erupted yet. Along with taking them to the dentist, it’s crucial to instill good oral habits in your children at an early age. This will help them care for their teeth, and it may prevent other oral issues as well, such as gum sensitivity and decay. Follow the do’s and don’ts below for the best oral health for your little one.

Do:

Brush their teeth twice a day.

For the best results, brush your toddler's teeth at least twice a day, after breakfast, and again before bed. Use a soft-bristled brush that won't damage the enamel. An electric toothbrush is also a terrific idea, since this might encourage your child to spend more time brushing their teeth.

Schedule a visit with their dentist every six months.

DentistSchedule a dental appointment as soon as your child’s first tooth emerges. Remind yourself to make appointments twice per year to ensure that the baby teeth are healthy. Regular cleaning keeps your little one’s smile bright, and the dentist can monitor them for cavities, gum disease, and other oral health issues.

Don't:

Neglect flossing their teeth at least once a day.

Many kids dislike flossing because it’s uncomfortable for them. Flossing removes particles from between teeth and prevents plaque buildup below the gum line, which is a common cause of gingivitis—or early gum disease.

Buy individual floss sticks to make the process easier, or invest in a device that sprays water at high speeds, making flossing fun and easy.

Encourage snacking late at night.

Some parents allow their kids to snack after dinner. Snacking keeps teeth exposed to sugar and other foods throughout the night, especially when little ones forget to brush and floss.

To prevent sugar and bacteria from settling on the surface of the teeth and gumline, make sure your little one doesn’t sneak a snack after bedtime. Encourage your little one to eat a sweet treat immediately after dinner or at special times throughout the day.
