Scuba diving is an exhilarating experience. You’ll discover an entirely different world and gain a new appreciation for marine life. If you’re ready to immerse yourself in the water, it’s important to be physically prepared. Diving involves constant kicking, using heavy gear, and being in an unfamiliar environment. Add the following exercises to your routine to help you handle those elements.

How to Prepare Your Body for Diving

1. Basic Squats

Building and stabilizing muscles will prevent injuries that may affect your legs when you kick. Strength training techniques help bolster these limbs.

While holding a dumbbell at each side, begin by performing basic squats, slowly lowering your body until your thighs are parallel with the ground. Avoid extending your knees past your toes. Slowly come back up and repeat.

2. Bending Row

This strength training exercise helps establish back muscles. Stand with a dumbbell in each hand, and bend at the hips until your back and the floor are parallel.

Keep your arms downward with your palms facing back. Bring the dumbbells up to your chest, lower, and repeat.

3. Chest Presses

Go back to the original position and repeat. This move helps build upper body strength, including the arms, shoulders, and chest.

4. Calf Raises

Strong calves are essential for a smooth diving experience. To bolster these muscles, stand with your legs shoulder-width apart.

Elevate your heels so that you’re standing on the balls of your feet. Bring your body back down until your heels touch the floor again, and continue doing this until you reach exhaustion.

5. Toe Pointing

Exercising your toes can help you avoid cramps while in the water. To stretch them out, sit on the ground with your legs out. Wrap a towel or an exercise band around your feet, and grab one end in each hand and pull toward you while keeping your heels in place.
