Fire extinguishers contain pressurized gas, foam, water, or another retardant to put out small flames and keep people safe. Every commercial building is required by law to have them as part of the structure’s emergency plan. Here’s more information about these essential safety devices, including how to use them correctly and when to replace them.

What You Need to Know About Fire Extinguishers

How to Use One

Everyone on your staff should know how to use an extinguisher correctly to prevent small fires from spreading. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration uses the acronym P.A.S.S.—this stands for pull, aim, squeeze, and sweep.

  1. Pull the small pin at the top of the device to release the operating lever. The pin also breaks the tamper seal.
  2. Aim the nozzle so that the contents hit the base of the flame.
  3. Squeeze the lever to spray the retardant on the blaze.
  4. Sweep the retardant across the base until the fire is out.

Stay about eight feet from the blaze in case the flames enlarge or the fire reignites. Repeat the procedure as necessary until the affected area is safe.

Signs Your Device Needs to Be Replaced

fire extinguisherAn extinguisher’s longevity depends in part on its contents. If your device features dry chemicals, it’ll last up to 12 years. Models containing wet chemicals, pressurized water, or carbon dioxide have a life span of five years. Use the extinguisher’s age to determine if it’s time to replace it.

A broken seal, missing pin, dents, or rust on the container indicate a need for replacement. Additionally, the instructions should be easy to read and not faded or worn away. You’ll also need to replace the extinguisher if it fails a hydrostatic test. During this inspection, a fire safety professional will test the cylinder’s pressure quality.
