There are several choices that undoubtedly affect the course of your adult life, including choosing a program of study in college. Though some people have known what they want to major in since they were a child, it's not that easy for others. If you're having trouble deciding, here are several factors to consider as you apply to Southeast Community College.

What Should Influence Your Choice of Major?

1. Career Goals

Higher education is ultimately meant to be a stepping stone on a way to your dream career. What sort of work do you think would make you happy? What jobs have a low unemployment rate? How much money do you want to earn and what kinds of jobs meet those expectations? Consider making a Venn diagram of your answers to these questions. Once you know the general field you want to get into, choose a major that supports that goal.

2. Strengths

Alternatively, consider what subjects you to best. For instance, if you know you're particularly good at science, look into science-related majors such as chemistry, physics, or biology. If you know that you work well with your hands, choose a career path that is more technical in nature.

community collegeIt’s possible your high school didn’t offer some of the areas in which you are interested. For example, you might be handy but never had an opportunity to take classes related to automotive, plumbing or construction. SCC has a wide range of career/technical offerings on three campuses, plus other satellite locations.

3. Passions & Values

For many people, the pursuit of education is driven by their passion. Those who believe in sustainable farming may choose Agriculture Management & Production. In the same vein, those who are passionate about health care and helping people may choose to study one of SCC’s 16 health-related programs. Reflect on how you want to contribute to society when weighing your decision.
