Clothes dryers make doing laundry much easier, and you probably want to preserve this convenience. If your appliance malfunctions, you’ll have to air your garments on a line until the dryer repairs are complete. To prevent this issue, use this guide to learn how to care for the machine properly.

Do:

Check the vent cap.

Once the warm air is done drying your clothes, it’s directed through ductwork and out of your home. The exit on the outside of your home is called the vent cap, and it’s vulnerable to the elements. Every few months, check that there are no branches, moss, or dirt accumulating around the cap so that the warm air has an easy escape. This will prevent the risk of a house fire and allow your dryer to work more efficiently.

Clean out the lint trap.

dryer repairWhen you take the filter out of the lint trap, some dust and lint will remain inside. If these particles are left to accumulate, they’ll increase the risk of a dryer fire. To clean them out, use a dryer lint brush or vacuum hose with the brush attachment.

Don’t:

Just empty the lint screen.

Most dryer owners are already in the habit of emptying the lint filter after each load. While this is crucial for preventing fires, it won’t get rid of the stubborn residue inside the fibers. To clear away grime and dryer sheet particles, deep clean the screen every 90 days. Place it in the dishwasher for a serious steam clean that won’t damage the filter.

Forget the drum.

Detergent remnants and residue from the dirt and sweat on your clothes will leave traces on the drum walls. Once every two months, dab a bit of rubbing alcohol on a clean rag and wipe down the inside of the drum to take off stubborn grime. This task will keep your clothes cleaner and prevent the drum holes from clogging with residue.
