Saving you the effort of scrubbing and rinsing all of your dishes by hand, dishwashers have become an indispensable amenity for modern homes. Because of their efficiency, it can be distressing when they don’t work. Some problems are common for dishwashers to experience. If you know what they are, you’ll either be able to address the issues yourself or call an appliance repair service for help.

Why Isn’t Your Dishwasher Draining Water Fully?

Sometimes, dishwashers have trouble draining water, causing the device to leak or retain water so that you can’t open it without water flooding onto your floor. If the appliance recently and suddenly lost electricity or was switched off abruptly, the water may not have drained because the cycle was never finished. In that case, starting a new cycle should resolve the issue.

However, if your dishes are also covered in food particles and debris, the garbage disposal could be releasing waste into the dishwasher through the drain that they share. Check that the drain hose is whole and connected, and remove the drain plug if it’s installed. Also, run the garbage disposal to clear it out.

Why Isn’t It Drying Dishes?

dishwasherYour dishwasher may not dry your dishes if the heating element or high-limit thermostat aren’t working properly. The heating element is on the bottom of the tub while the thermostat is typically behind the access panel close to it. Check both the heating element and the thermostat by touching them with a multimeter and seeing whether it detects the voltage. An appliance maintenance professional may need to fix or replace them.

Alternatively, perhaps your rinse aid dispenser needs more fluid. If neither the heating element nor thermostat appear to be the problem, buy some rinse aid from a local grocery store and fill the rinse aid dispenser with it.

Why Is It Making Noises?

Nowadays, dishwashers are designed to run quietly, so you may be suspicious if your appliance is noisy. This is usually due to faulty internal pieces. For example, if the arm seals and bearing rings are loose, they’ll shake and vibrate.

Spray arms that are bent or malfunctioning may be the cause of the noise, or perhaps a broken pump. If you look inside of your dishwasher and notice anything that appears detached, cracked, or distorted, you may need to have it replaced by a professional.
