Concrete serves a variety of purposes for both residential and commercial projects, from buildings to driveways. If you’re preparing for one of these ventures, you’ll first need to place an order for your materials. The following guide offers some important factors to consider to ensure you have the resources needed for success.

How to Order Concrete

1. Determine Which PSI You Need

PSI, or pounds per square inch, is determined by evaluating the water, cement, and aggregate composition of a product. This ratio directly ties to the strength and durability of the material. The number assigned refers to the concrete’s ability to handle compression or carry weight. It also identifies the durability and strength of a product.

The scores range from 2,500 to 5,000, with lower numbers representing products that can be used for simple projects like walkways, while higher numbers represent products that can be used for complex ventures like construction.

2. Measure the Area

concreteOnce you know what kind of concrete you need, you’ll need to start figuring out how much to order. To do this, measure the full length, width and depth of your project site.

Use a handheld ruler for small areas, a measuring tape for larger areas, and use a calculator to accurately identify the area. To avoid any mistakes, do this process twice for complete accuracy.

3. Inspect the Site Base

In some cases, giving the concrete supplier the exact dimensions of your project site could actually leave you short, depending on the lay of the land. To avoid this issue, evaluate the base of your project site. If the site is even, graded, and flat, you likely won’t have to ask the supplier to increase your product.

However, if your site features any downward slopes, it’s likely the area you calculated won’t account for added depth, which could lead to a supply shortage. In this case, ask the supplier to round up a few digits to ensure there’s enough to go around.
