Semi-trucks have heavier cargo demands than the standard passenger vehicle. Day in and day out of taking long trips will inevitably come with some trouble, potentially requiring big rig towing. However, being aware of any potential problems allows you to take all necessary precautions and be able to identify them at their earliest warnings signs.

What Are Some Common Semi-Truck Issues?

1. Slow Building Pressure

Slowing down an 80,000 pound semi-truck is no easy feat, but it is accomplished with the air brake system, which uses compressed air to create friction and slow the wheels down. This offers many advantages over hydraulic brake systems, but it’s not infallible. One consistent problem truckers have to deal with is a failing compressor, which is needed to replenish the air inside the reservoir to ensure there is enough pressure inside the system.

Test the pressure build rates regularly to ensure the system is able to reach the correct pressure level. In a dual air brake system, which is commonly used for most big rigs, the building pressure should go from 85 psi to 100 psi in 45 seconds. If not, the compressor, and possibly the pipes leading to it, will likely start leaking and should be repaired or replaced.

2. Tire Blowouts

big rig towingDriving thousands of miles each week has the most significant impact on your tires. Pressure and maintenance checks are recommended at least once a week to prevent on-road failures. When you drive on tires that have low pressure, it puts excessive flexing in the sidewall of the rubber and causes the tread to degrade much faster. Eventually, especially if low-pressure ridden tires are reinflated, it will result in a blowout of one or more tires, and you will have no choice but to call for big rig towing assistance.

3. Failing U-Joint

A universal joint is a small cross-shaped component with bearings on each end that allows for movement of the driveshaft. It is necessary for transferring power from the transmission to the differential while keeping the driveshaft connected and moving freely. A bad U-joint can cause the truck to make a jerking sensation and clunking noise when pressing and letting off the accelerator. Failing u-joints can also create vibrations throughout the vehicle when traveling at certain speeds.

Regularly lubricating the u-joint is the best way to keep it in good condition. However, if failing signs are noticed, it’s easy to replace this part and return to safely driving on your routes.
