Water well drilling provides the opportunity to enjoy fresh, clean water without paying monthly utility bills. If you recently moved to a rural area and want to commission well drilling, you should review what the process entails. Use this guide to know what to expect.

4 Steps of Well Drilling

1. Determine the Well’s Location

Your water well drilling contractor starts the process by surveying the land to choose a location that won’t interfere with plumbing pipes and geological formations. Once the location has been scouted and the applicable permits have been issued, the contractor establishes the well’s boundaries and parameters to complete site planning.

2. Drill the Well

However, if your plans include a consolidated or rock option that’s around 250 feet deep, the contractor will need to drill into the earth. Deeper wells are considered more stable and reliable, but they require more labor.

3. Add the Casing & Screens

After drilling, the contractor will install the protective plastic or metal casing that prevents the well from collapsing upon itself. This component is generally between 4 and 6 inches in diameter and keeps sand, dirt, and other particles out of the water.

Screens are also installed at the bottom to protect the water from sediment and other contaminants. A cap gets added to keep the top of the well sealed from pollutants.

4. Grout & Complete Other Finishing Tasks

The contractor fills in the space between the casing and the well wall with grout to finish stabilizing the water source. They’ll clean out the well by using either pressurized air or water to remove sediment.

Next, the well pump gets installed above or within the well depending on the model. While jet pumps are easier to access, submersible versions last longer because their waterproof parts don’t overheat. Finally, the water is tested for pollutants, such as excessive minerals and fertilizer.
