Gum tissue plays the essential role of keeping your teeth in place, but it can be easy to forget to take care of this area every day. Adjusting your dental care routine and making positive lifestyle choices goes a long way toward healthier gums, so follow these dentist-approved tips to ensure better oral hygiene.

How to Take Care of Your Gums

1. Eat Gum-Friendly Foods

Some foods are better than others for gum tissue. For example, textured fruits and vegetables, such as carrots and apples, naturally scrub plaque from your gums and teeth and stimulate saliva production to rid your mouth of debris. Others, such as dark leafy greens and citrus fruits, contain vitamin C that fortifies gum tissue and reduces inflammation.

On the other hand, avoid sugary and acidic foods and drinks, as they can irritate oral tissues and contribute to gum disease.

2. Brush & Floss Every Day

dentistYou must brush your teeth and floss down the gum line every day to remove plaque and lodged food, but remember to be gentle. When you slide the floss between your teeth, go all the way down to the gum line and gently move the string back and forth. Doing this prevents plaque from building up below the gum line and causing severe infections.

3. Visit the Dentist Twice a Year

No matter how healthy you feel, you should see the dentist at least twice a year. Brushing and flossing aren’t enough to remove plaque built up just below the gum line and in hard-to-reach areas. During exams, a dental hygienist will clean these areas to prevent gingivitis, gum disease, and other serious oral health issues. This is a great time to also discuss at-home care with the dentist, so you best care for your smile.
