When it comes to moving, glassware is exceptionally stressful to pack. Here, review tips for packing glasses, vases, ornamental glass, and other pieces in ways that avoid breakage. Extra care and attention go a long way when you’re moving fragile items, and help your movers keep your belongings safe.

How to Pack Glassware Effectively

1. Collect Cardboard Cell Boxes

Use cardboard cell boxes, or boxes featuring inserts with cell configurations, to protect glasses during your move. The inserts keep the glasses separated to avoid scratches and other damage. Wrap particularly delicate pieces such as champagne flutes and other stemware in packing paper or bubble wrap as extra protection.

2. Use Bubble Wrap

moversWork with bubble wrap for all other glass pieces, including ornamental glass and mirrors. Wrap each piece carefully in tissue paper or other dye-free packing paper before using the bubble product, since bubbles touching the glass can burst and cause suction-related damage.

Apply tape once you’re finished to keep the packing product secure. If you’re rolling the glassware, tuck the sides in as you go to fortify the wrap further.

3. Avoid Newspaper

Never use newspaper or other paper with ink on your glassware, since the products can leave stains that are difficult—if not impossible—to remove. If you’re out of bubble wrap and ink-free packing paper, use old wrapping paper to protect glass items. Ensure the non-decorative side touches the glass to prevent stains.

4. Fill Empty Box Spaces

Use old hand towels, air-filled packing pillows, and clean socks to fill in any gaps in every glassware box. Doing so prevents unnecessary movements that can cause scratches, fractures, and breaks. Add a layer of packing paper to the top of each box before you close it so you cannot press down on the box and possibly break its contents.

5. Label Everything

Label every box as “FRAGILE” or “FRAGILE: GLASSWARE” once you are finished packing and taping. Clear labeling lets your movers know to take extra care with the boxes and not to stack them or place them near anything that could fall on them during transit. You may want to dedicate a room in your home to all boxes featuring fragile items that you can point out to the movers.
