It can be frustrating, or even a little alarming, to see your air conditioner leaking water. While it’s expected that your AC will leak a small amount, a constant drip resulting in a pool of water is a negative sign, and there are several reasons why it could be happening. Below, learn more about the causes and signs of leaky HVAC equipment.

Common Causes of Leaky Air Conditioners

1. Clogged Condensate Drain Line

Condensate is the moisture that results from warm air being turned into cold, and AC systems are equipped to dispose of this moisture through the condensate drain line. However, air carries significant quantities of tiny particles, fibers, and dirt, all of which can collect in the drain line and cause blockages. This can slow the flow of condensate or stop it altogether, forcing the water to leak out through the nearest opening in the line and resulting in a steady drip.

2. Dirty Air Filter

The excess cold air can freeze the evaporator coils and shut them down, causing the moisture within to melt while it’s out of commission. The resulting water then becomes a troublesome leak.

3. Damaged or Rusted Drain Pan

Situated beneath the indoor air handler, drain pans capture any condensation that may have missed your drain line. Most air conditioners have two, including a permanent one beneath the evaporator coils, and a removable one under the unit itself. If either of these become rusted through, cracked, or otherwise damaged, they can allow moisture to leak out through the gaps. You can replace the removable pans yourself, but a professional will have to be contacted to replace the permanent one since it’s welded in place.
