Who Are Some of the Most Acclaimed Olympic Figure Skaters?

1. Michelle Kwan

Throughout her decade-long career at the senior level of figure skating, Kwan was recognizable for her grace, athleticism, artistry, and clean consistency. 

In addition to winning gold in five world championships and nine U.S. championships, she earned medals in the 1998 and 2002 Olympics. She is tied with Maribel Vinson for the all-time National Championship record.

2. Tara Lipinski

Figure SkatingAt just 15 years old, Lipinski became the youngest Olympic gold medalist in women’s singles figure skating. Her 1998 victory over fellow American Michelle Kwan was unexpected and major news at the time.

After becoming an Olympic champion and successfully winning every senior-level competition she entered, Lipinski retired from the sport. Today she’s a commentator alongside fellow skater Johnny Weir.

3. Brian Boitano

Brian Boitano is a true legend in the figure skating community. In 1982, he became the first American to land a triple axel in competition. He was World Champion in 1986 and 1988, U.S. Champion in 1985, 1986, 1987, and 1988, and won Olympic gold in 1988.

After winning an Emmy for the 1990 film Carmen on Ice, Boitano returned to amateur competition and competed in the 1994 Olympics.

4. Scott Hamilton

Before winning gold in the 1984 Olympics, Hamilton earned first place in the World Championships and the U.S. Championships four years in a row.

Following his highly decorated career as an athlete, he became a renowned commentator for several networks. He’s been on broadcasts for the sport since 1985.
