In recent years, you’ve probably seen more organic food popping up in supermarkets and restaurants. Most consumers have a general idea about what it means to buy organic, but you may not know the details about what this qualification entails. Here’s what you should know.

A Guide to Organic Food

What does it mean when food is organic?

The term “organic” means the food has been grown or produced without any potentially harmful additives, such as manmade fertilizers or pesticides. Produce that has the USDA Organic seal also hasn’t been genetically modified. Meat, poultry, and dairy products can also be considered organic when farmers don’t use antibiotics or growth hormones for their animals.

How can you tell which food is organic?

organic foodThere are several classifications of organic goods. Most often, this information will be displayed on the product’s label. For instance, 100% organic means all the ingredients are organic.

The term “organic” on its own indicates that the majority (at least 95%) of the ingredients are organic. Finally, “made with organic ingredients” indicates that at least 70% of ingredients are organic and that the remaining 30% aren’t made from genetically modified organisms.

Does organic food have more nutritional value?

Some research suggests there could be nutritional advantages to eating organic. In particular, organic produce appears to have a higher concentration of flavonoids, which are antioxidants that help the body process toxins, such as free radicals. Without the added pesticide residue and toxic metals from synthetic fertilizers, many people feel choosing organic is a healthier decision overall.

Do organic products taste different?

Since taste is a matter of personal preference, it’s difficult to determine for sure whether organic produce, meat, or dairy have a superior taste. Yet, research indicates organic produce has better storing qualities than conventional food, as it has lower nitrate levels. It’s possible the reduced nitrates are responsible for the claims about the improved taste of organic goods.
