Creation

In 1930, two food vendors named Harry and Pat Olivieri were bored while selling hot dogs on the streets of Philadelphia, so they seasoned some bread and added chopped-up, crispy beef. The Italian brothers were eating this new sandwich when a cab driver asked for one. He paid 10 cents and noted that he’d rather have the sandwich with steak. The brothers then tested his idea.

Evolution 

steakWord spread about the tasty sandwich, and the duo moved their cart business into a building to keep up with demand. Soon, the restaurant manager added provolone to the sandwich, and the “cheese” version of the creation was born.

Cheez Whiz® was invented in 1952, and the Olivieri’s added the gooey goodness to their sandwiches. Restaurants and food carts across the U.S. began selling their own versions, some using top round beef and others rib-eye. The toppings expanded to include spicy and sweet peppers, American cheese, and onions. 

Today

You can find Philly cheese steaks in many diners and Americana restaurants. Try a taste of history by ordering one the classic way: thinly sliced steak on an Italian roll with cooked onions and bell peppers. You also have the option of a Chicken Philly, if you prefer chicken to beef.  Feel free to add to the sandwich onion, mayo, lettuce, and tomato.
