No one wants to open their self-storage unit to find damaged items, which is why it’s important to pack your furniture carefully. Each type faces different threats and requires special handling to prevent them. Below are proven tips you can use to ensure everything you tuck away will be safe.

A Guide to Packing Furniture

Wood

Wood is sensitive to temperature swings and humidity. Fluctuations between extreme heat and cold can cause the material to expand and contract, leading to cracking. High moisture levels can cause warping, while it may split if dried out.

First, treat the wood furniture with a polish that will introduce a safe amount of moisture and create a protective barrier around it. You can then dismantle larger parts so the furniture is easy to store.

Cover all items with padded moving blankets and stay away from plastic sheets, as they may create condensation. You can further protect your furniture by storing it off the ground on a pallet.

Fabric

self storageFabric can trap food crumbs and other debris that attract pests, so clean furniture thoroughly before storing. Make sure it’s dry before storing so moisture doesn’t damage the fibers or contribute to mold growth.

The fabric may bleed color if humidity levels climb too high, so wrap the furniture in a white plastic sheet to prevent bleeding onto other items in the self-storage unit.

Plastic

Plastic holds up well under tough conditions, but you’ll still need to clean it before storing it. Wipe it down with warm water and dish soap, and allow it to air dry before heading to the self-storage unit.

Next, wrap it in a drop cloth or blanket. If it’s a light piece of furniture, such as a patio chair, you may be able to store it on top of heavier items to save space.

Glass

Shattered glass can ruin a piece of furniture, and shards may damage others. First, wrap the glass pieces in packing paper and then apply masking tape across the surface to better support the glass.

You can then apply a thick layer of bubble wrap to all surfaces and secure a thick cardboard piece on either side to create a strong, durable barrier. Dedicate a section of the storage unit for glass furniture and make sure nothing is stored on top of it.
