Some flowers we give or receive are very special, such as birthday flowers or those given for a wedding. These are the kinds of arrangements that many people like to preserve so they can remember the occasion. The method you use depends on your priority, such as speed, convenience, or quality of the end result. Below are some different options for preserving your flowers.

The Simple Way

One of the easiest ways to preserve flowers is to use glycerin, which replaces moisture in flowers and retains their natural texture. First, peel the skin from the base of the stem and cut the stem diagonally to give the glycerin better access. Also, cut the bottom leaves off of the stem.

Place the flowers in a vase with one part glycerin and two parts lukewarm water, and leave the flowers for two to three weeks. You’ll get the best results if the bouquet is fresh, and with this method, you can admire your wedding or birthday flowers while the process takes place.

The Quick Way

Microwaving is a quick method for preserving flowers. Put the flowers blossom-up in a microwave-safe container with one or two inches of silica gel (the amount depends on the size of the flower). Gently pour more gel over the petals, then microwave the flowers for two to five minutes with no lid on the container.

The heat required varies for different flowers, which makes this method a little tricky. For example, roses can take a lot of heat but daisies can’t. Cover the container and let it sit with a slightly open lid for 24 hours.

Traditional Methods

Birthday FlowersTwo easy and long-standing methods are air drying and pressing. Air drying involves hanging bundles of three or four flowers upside down in a well-ventilated area.

Cut the bottom leaves off of the stems before hanging, and ensure the flowers are not in direct sunlight. Drying could take several weeks. To press, put a flower inside of a large book or pile of books with a sheet of paper on either side and leave it for a few weeks. The flat flower will be perfect for framing.

For Best Results

Freeze-drying is a complicated process, so it’s best to have it done by a professional. Your florist should be able to recommend a company to do it. The results will definitely be worth it, as your preserved flowers will retain their original appearance, including the bright colors, and they will also keep their scent. Be careful when handling the freeze-dried flowers as they will be fragile.
