Brake failure is one of the scariest mechanical issues you can experience while in moving traffic. Fortunately, if you know how to respond, you can make it to an auto shop safely and ensure prompt brake repair. If you ever have brake failure, remember the tips below.

Do:

Whatever you can to decelerate.

Once you realize the brakes are no longer functioning, employ other strategies to decelerate after turning on your hazards. For example, turn up on to a hill if possible. Otherwise, downshift into a lower gear.

If you have an automatic transmission, taking your foot off the gas pedal will prompt downshifting. If the vehicle has a manual transmission, use the clutch to work your way through the lower gears until the car comes to a complete stop. Once you’re safe, have the car towed to an auto shop.

Engage the emergency brake.

auto shopWhile you can technically engage the emergency brake at any time, it will be easiest to maintain control of the vehicle if you wait until you’re traveling at about 25 to 30 miles per hour. Otherwise, the car may skid. Since the emergency braking system is entirely separate from the primary hydraulic brake system, it should still work following brake failure.

Don’t:

Panic and start swerving.

Panicking is a perfectly natural response to brake failure. However, keeping your cool will ensure a better outcome. Scope out an alternate route, like hopping onto the shoulder, if you’re in heavy traffic.

Try to remain calm and keep pumping the brakes. Depending on the cause of the failure, they may work—though not at full capacity—after you’ve pumped them four or five times.

Turn off the vehicle.

If the emergency brake is unresponsive, turning off the ignition entirely is probably the next logical step. However, this will also turn off the power steering.

That means you won’t be able to control the vehicle as the engine winds down. Keep the ignition on to ensure you’re able to properly handle the vehicle and steer it to a safe area.
