If you have young children who enjoy watching television, playing computer games, and using portable devices, you might feel concerned about the amount of time they spend in front of screens. Many early learning centers recommend enforcing a few rules to ensure your child gets the sunshine and activity they need to thrive. Review the following tips that will help you emphasize healthy electronic usage.

How to Limit Screen Time

1. Be a Good Example

Present a positive example for your kids by staying off your devices as much as possible. Children mimic their parents. If you and your partner are always on your phones or using other screen-based electronics, they will follow suit.

Make it clear that your life does not revolve around your phone and that you have many other interests besides checking your email or beating a high score. Avoid bringing any electronics to the dinner table and don’t text while you’re having a conversation with them.

2. Designate “No Screen” Zones

Create “screen-free” areas in your home to encourage healthy interactions among family members. The dining room and kitchen both work well as “no screen” spaces, allowing you and your children to focus on preparing meals, solving homework problems, and spending time together.

3. Spend Time Outdoors

If your property includes front, back, and side yards, use them to garden, listen to birds and insects, and make crafts from objects such as dried leaves and pine cones. Outdoor time can also include sports, which help children learn about concentration, teamwork, and the benefits of physical activity.

4. Visit the Library

Foster a love of reading in your children with frequent visits to the library. Talk about how reading can transport them to other worlds, provide fascinating facts about history, and help them learn new skills.

Borrow a range of books so your children have options and can discover what interests them the most, such as books about geology, crafting, and science fiction. Always keep your shelves stocked and read to the little ones before bed.
