The winter season is finally gone, which means many boat lovers are prepping to take their vehicles out of storage and get them onto the water. Although you may be eager to get started on all your summer adventures, there are a few steps you need to follow when removing your vessel from the storage unit. For the best results, utilize the following guide.

How to Take Your Boat Out of Storage Safely

1. Examine the Engine

After long periods of sitting, the boat’s engine is your priority. It’s possible it sustained damage while it was in storage due to factors like rust, freezing, cracks, or dead batteries. To start, examine the hoses, belts, and cables; ensure none of them are brittle, loose, or leaking. Next, check the fuel hose; while it should be flexible, it shouldn’t feel soft or fragile. Finally, check the boat’s electrical connection to ensure the battery is fully charged and free of corrosion.

2. Protect the Propeller

storageWhen you take your boat from storage, the propellers should still be in the same position and condition as when you last used it. If they’re warped, bent, or have any dings, they might have been damaged when you put the boat into storage. In this case, you’ll need to invest in repairs, as your vessel won’t function properly or be able to move through the water without them. If they’re in good shape, protect them with a propeller cover before removing your boat from the storage unit.

3. Test Your Trailer

Your boat may be in great shape, but if you don’t have an adequate trailer and hitch to remove it from storage, it won’t do you any good. You’ll need to be very careful pulling the boat out to ensure it doesn’t get damaged. Visit your local hardware shop and ask for a hitch strong enough to carry your boat’s weight. Then set up the trailer, ensuring all parts are adequately lubricated to avoid tension when removing the vessel. After you’ve connected the watercraft to your car, double-check the signals and lights to ensure you can safely drive it to your destination without an accident.
