Many modern homes feature quartz countertops due to the material’s enhanced beauty and durability. Although quartz is strong, it can stain and degrade if it isn’t cared for properly. Here are a few tips you should follow to ensure the longevity of your countertops.

Do:

Use a gentle cleaning agent.

Harsh chemicals, like undiluted bleach, damages the bond between the quartz and resin, causing the surface to degrade over time. When cleaning the material, always use a solution that’s designed to work on quartz. These formulas are strong enough to remove stubborn blemishes and gentle enough to prevent discoloration and damage. Additionally, use a soft cloth or towel since abrasive sponges and brushes will scratch the surface.

Wipe spills immediately.

countertopColored beverages, like red wine, fruit juice, and coffee, will leave permanent stains on quartz. Fortunately, you can wipe them away quickly before the pigments have a chance to set. Use a soft, damp cloth to ensure you remove every drop of liquid from the surface.

Don’t:

Expose the counter to heat.

Never set hot pans directly on the quartz countertops, even if it’s for a moment. Heat exposure will melt the resin, creating unsightly blemishes on the surface. Always place hot pans and dishware on trivets or hot pads.

Forget to use a cutting board.

Although quartz is extremely durable, knives and other sharp kitchen tools will still scratch the material. Use a cutting board when slicing fruits and vegetables so that you don’t create nicks in the surface.
