To keep your home in working order and fix furniture and appliances promptly after they break, you need to have a good set of hand tools. However, many homeowners don’t know what tools are absolutely essential. Here’s a rundown of some of the most important pieces that everyone should have.

A Guide to Essential Hand Tools for Homeowners

1. Screwdriver

There are two different types of screwdrivers that every homeowner should have in their toolbox: flathead and Phillips head. All screws will need to use one of these over the other. You should also consider getting a couple of different sizes, as using the wrong screwdriver can cause damage to both the hand tool and the screw.

If you don’t want to get several different screwdrivers, consider a multi-bit screwdriver. They come with an assortment of flathead and Phillips head bits in various sizes that can be attached to your screwdriver when necessary.

2. Pliers

hand toolsPliers are used for gripping something round or twisting wires. There are several different types, but if you’re just starting to build up your hand tool collection, consider getting both a pair of vise-grips and needle-nose pliers. Vise-grips can be used to remove broken screws and loosen frozen nuts.

Needle-nose pliers are used for precise jobs, including wire cutting. Once you start to grow your toolbox, you might want to buy adjustable-point and Channellock pliers as well.

3. Measuring Tape

Measuring tapes will help during construction and home improvement projects. Measuring with a yardstick isn’t practical if you need to measure a large space. Choose one that measures about 25 feet for ease of use.

4. Hammer

Even if you don’t complete a lot of home improvement projects, having a hammer is essential. You can use it to hang pictures, fix your car, or remove nails. Although there are many different types of hammers, the average homeowner will probably only need a simple wooden claw hammer that weighs about 16 ounces.

5. Level

Levels are important for tasks like hanging pictures and checking whether your tables are level. You can get an electronic model or one that includes a bubble of air to measure the slope. Your best option is a 24’’ level to ensure you have enough room to work with long surfaces.
