With the summer heat in full force, you’re likely grateful that your air conditioning unit can turn your home into a cool oasis. However, with your energy bills increasing along with the temperature, you may be looking for ways to save money and increase the efficiency of your cooling system. In addition to consulting your HVAC contractor, consider these tips for beating the heat on a budget.

How to Improve Your AC’s Efficiency

1. Cover Windows

While you might be loving the summer sunshine pouring in through your windows, it’s actually working against your AC. Especially in west and south-facing windows, you’ll notice persistent heat entering the room. This is because the sun rises and sets in these directions.

So, while you might enjoy the morning sunshine, consider covering windows in the middle of the day, when it’s the hottest, particularly if you aren’t home.

When choosing a window covering, opt for a thermal curtain that keeps out both light and heat. Alternatively, you can install blackout curtains or interior shutters. If you already have curtains but they’re sheer, consider upgrading to a thicker material that will block out the rays.

2. Change AC Filter

In order to determine how often to replace your air filter, you’ll want to consider the type of filter, size of your family, and whether or not you have pets and/or allergies. You can consult your HVAC contractor and make a schedule. Replacing your dirty air filter can lower your unit’s energy consumption by up to 15%.

3. Clean Vents & Around Condenser Unit

If your AC has vents, you should regularly check to make sure they aren’t dirty. Vacuum them and make sure furniture or toys aren’t blocking airflow.

While you’re at it, check on your condenser unit. If it’s receiving a lot of direct sunlight, it might overheat and work harder than necessary. Find a way to give it some shade without obstructing the airflow to ensure it does its crucial job.
