As part of auto maintenance, you need to replace your car’s filters regularly to ensure consistent performance. Here are some of the filters you should be aware of.

Top 3 Filters That Affect Auto Maintenance

1. Oil Filter

Most oil changes, which are typically recommended after 3,000 to 5,000 miles of driving, will also involve replacing the oil filter. The filter helps trap metallic particles, dirt, and other contaminants to ensure the oil continues flowing normally. Removing these impurities minimizes engine wear and keeps the oil from developing a sludge-like consistency. Replacing the filter during an oil change also ensures the new oil isn’t contaminated by these pollutants.

2. Engine Air Filter

auto maintenanceThe engine air filter helps protect the engine from dust, insects, and other airborne debris. These small pollutants can block the flow of oxygen, which harms the engine’s performance and fuel efficiency. Failure to replace the filter can eventually lead to serious engine damage, which is often made apparent by black exhaust smoke.

The engine air filter should be replaced every 30,000 miles. However, those who drive in heavy traffic conditions need to replace this filter more frequently because of increased exposure to pollution emitted by other vehicles.

3. Fuel Filter

This filter traps grit and rust present in the fuel tank to keep the contaminants from affecting the fuel injectors. The engine can then draw fuel properly and avoid pump and injector failures.

Fuel filters will generally need to be replaced between 20,000 and 40,000 miles or every two years. Clogged fuel filters should be replaced immediately, as a clog can keep your car from starting.
