As a new driver, you’re excited to get behind the wheel. But even with a driver education course, you’re going to encounter situations you haven’t experienced yet. You can’t control other drivers, but you can learn to expect the unexpected and drive defensively to prevent accidents and keep car insurance rates affordable. Here’s some advice on how to stay safe on the road.

How to Drive Defensively

1. Stay Alert

The most important rule when driving is to stay alert and focused on the road. Distractions like cell phones (which can’t be used by anyone driving in Connecticut) can take your focus off other drivers, road signs, and hazards. Stay alert by putting your phone in the glove box or out of reach in the backseat, and avoid other activities (like eating) while driving.

2. Don’t Follow Closely

Following the car in front of you too closely is dangerous and can cause an accident. If that car stops suddenly, you won’t have anywhere to go.

As a general rule, maintain at least three to four seconds of distance between you and the car in front of you so that you can stop or take evasive maneuvers if necessary. When you hit someone from behind, you’ll be at fault and see car insurance rates increase.

3. Use Caution When Stopping

When stopped at a stop sign, use caution when pulling out, and don’t take any unnecessary risks. It’s better to wait a few seconds until traffic clears than to try to pull out quickly.

4. Use Signals

Defensive driving also requires being courteous to other drivers, and that includes using your turn signals. When turning or changing lanes, let other drivers know your plans so that they can react accordingly. Also, avoid unnecessary lane changes, swerving around other cars, or pulling out in front of others.

5. Avoid Aggressive Drivers

If someone else is driving unsafely (tailgating you, swerving, or not using their signals), take evasive action. Pull over and let them pass, or turn into a parking lot or side street until they’ve passed.

Don’t speed up or try to challenge them, which can lead to an accident or a road rage incident. Pulling over and stopping for a few seconds is a much safer option.
