When you want a firm, young-looking complexion free of wrinkles and scars, you have many skin care treatment options. One that’s become increasingly popular is microneedling. This minimally invasive procedure pricks the skin with small needles. With less downtime and discomfort than other options, microneedling is a safe and effective way to improve your appearance.

How Microneedling Works

Over time, skin can lose collagen, causing wrinkles, sagging, and other signs of aging. Microneedling counteracts that loss by naturally stimulating collagen production. Most patients see improvements in their appearance within a few weeks of the procedure.

A skin care professional uses a handheld dermaroller, a small wheel covered with needles ranging from .5 to 2.5 millimeters long. As the wheel is rolled over your face, the needles prick the surface. In response to these small injuries, your skin produces more collagen and elastin, leaving it looking more even and smooth while reducing the appearance of scars and large pores.

Although microneedling is most commonly used on the face, it can reduce the appearance of cellulite and scarring on other parts of the body. It’s also used to treat hair loss, as the microscopic punctures can stimulate hair growth.

What Is Microneedling Like?

skin careTo get the most from microneedling, skin care professionals recommend undergoing several sessions, with several weeks between them to allow for healing. The typical session takes about two hours, and you can resume normal activity immediately.

Although the procedure is relatively painless, your aesthetician or doctor will begin the session by applying a topical anesthetic to prevent any minor discomfort. The actual procedure takes about 30 minutes.

There might be some minor bleeding, but the needles don't penetrate deep into the skin. After the procedure, the doctor will apply a calming solution or treatment. Your skin may look red and inflamed for several hours.

After the treatment, continue to use your topical anti-aging or skin care treatments. There's evidence that the procedure increases the effectiveness of these products by allowing them to penetrate more deeply into the skin. Apply sunscreen diligently as well since you’ll be especially sensitive to the sun post-treatment.
